Chosen Family

The beauty of chosen families lies in its inclusivity. The concept recognizes the diverse ways in which black people of the Diaspora build meaningful connections and find a sense of belonging, reinforcing the idea that family is not solely determined by blood, but by the mutual choice to love, support, and care for one another. In essence, chosen family in the African diaspora is more than a personal preference—it is a political, spiritual, and cultural practice of care. It’s a reclamation of connection and a form of liberation, rooted in the idea that love and loyalty are not limited to lineage but can be cultivated with intention and reciprocity.

Mike and Josh: The most romantic aspect of our chosen family is the love and acceptance we share. We've created a space where we can be vulnerable, open, and honest with each other. We've learned that family isn't just about blood ties; it's about the bonds we form with others who love and support us unconditionally.


 

LuLu: We chose our chosen family because of the way we take care of each other, the way we show up for one another, the way we just know each other & most importantly just who we are & can be with one another. It’s really a safe space that we can’t find elsewhere.
